Definitive answer: Laundry sink drain into washer standpipe
Author: filippoquinto (CA)

Hello everyone!

I've been reading a lot of threads about pros and cons of using the washer standpipe as drain for a laundry sink, but I can't understand what's (if there is any) the definitive answer to my scenario.

I currently have my washer draining into a tall standpipe via the goose-neck shaped hose.
I would like to do a quick installation of a laundry sink next to the washer. I understand using the standpipe for the sink drain while the washer hose still connected to it on the top is not advisable, but can I just drain the sink into the standpipe with a wye (no pTrap for the sink as the standpipe has one already about 2 inches above floor) and just move the washer goose-neck drain hose from the top of it to the sink rim?

HEre's a (bad) sketch of what I'm thinking: [drive.google.com]

Thank you and sorry for the confusion!

PS:I'm a total newbe at plumbing

what you want to do is nothing more than a double bolw sink set-up but only one side is a sink..
why not leave the hose in the standpipe? it'll work that way..

Here in NC we can use a tee in the standpipe to catch the laundry sink drain, just keep the tee as high as you can.

my understanding from reading other threads on this subject is that leaving the washer hose at the top of the standpipe while connecting the sink drain below it with ad wye, would cause water backflow in the sink when the washer is draining.
I guess the main question is, can the washer standpipe be used as drain for a sink. As a newbe, I would imagine yes, why not? but reading around it looks like it might not be possible?

may or may not backflow into sink

if it does, so what ?

not a problem

imo: actually a + as the sink will act as a 'reservoir' in the event of a small partial stoppage giving plenty of warning BEFORE the flood
