 Shower pipe leaks only sometimes
Author: anitaaeiou (IL)

Our one piece acrylic shower (17 years old) has been leaking when we take a shower--except that it doesn't leak with every shower. We know it's the hot water as the hot water pipe drips--we have opened the ceiling below the shower to see this. Unfortunately the pipe leaks above the subfloor in the ceiling. We opened the wall behind the shower, but we cannot find the source of the leak. We have re-caulked the shower inside and out (it is a glass door). It only leaks sometimes. I'll take a shower and it will leak, then my husband will take a shower immediately after me and it will not leak (I weigh less than my husband if you're wondering!). Then someone in the house will shower first and it won't leak, but the next person showers and it will leak. Then it won't leak for days after multiple showers! There is one spot that we are having a hard time getting to behind the drywall to get a better view of the pipes. Help!!

It may simply be water that is getting behind the trim on the front side of the shower back into the wall. You could do a water test by pouring water over the faucet trim and looking for leakage or just remove the trim, caulk it, reinstall and recheck for leaks.

ALL of the pipes, other than the one up to the shower head will ALWAYS leak if they were the problem, NOT once in a while while the shower is being used. IF you cannot determine where the leak is you may need a plumber.

Our plumber has been out several times. First he thought it was our toilet, which we replaced. Then he thought it was caulking around the shower which had separated over time, so we recaulked inside and out. We think we have identified the leak - the plate around the faucet handle was not caulked, so we sealed that and will test it to see if it still leaks after the caulk has cured.
