Weil Mcclain boiler with indirect water heater issue
Author: dr057 (NY)

Hello,

I have a weil mcclain gold oil fired boiler with a PHCC 9048-609 indirect water heater. It's about 10 yrs old. The problem I'm seeing is after the hot water gets used up in the tank it seems to take a very long time (maybe an hour or so) for the hot water to regenerate.

It has 3 zones and one is the hw zone and all 3 zone valves were replaced recently so I know the valve is working fine.

What may be causing it to take so long for hot water to generate, could there be an issue with the PHCC controls?

Thanks, Dean

how do you know the zone valve for the domestic hot water is working fine?
have you felt the pipe supplying boiler water to the indirect when the domestic hot water runs low?
is there a 'zone control' relay controling the 3 zones?
what is the high limit on the boiler set at?

I felt the pipe going to boilermate and it's hot.

have you felt the pipe supplying boiler water to the indirect when the domestic hot water runs low?

I think when water runs low the piep still feels hot, but I'll chk that next time I can.

is there a 'zone control' relay controling the 3 zones?

I don't know, how do I find out?

what is the high limit on the boiler set at?

It's set to approx. 180.

Are there any 'hidden', or otherwise, leaks in the HW distribution?

No, no leaks. And just recently had 3 zone valves replaced, 3 safety valves, expansion tank and inlet flow valve. The hot water is fine, it just seems to take long for it to detect that all hot water is gone and needs to be regenerated. That's why I was thinking maybe the boilermate thermostat-aquastat control is going bad?

As for a zone control....You're looking for a box that your thermostat wires run to. If you don't have one, there is now way to give priority to DHW, and the boiler may be trying to satisfy a heat zone at the same time it tries to heat the hot water.

Ahhh..........Read the manual for the indirect, I'd bet the new zone valve is too small. What's the make and model of the zone valve for the indirect?

Wouldn't the plumber simply match the new zone valve to the one he was replacing? ( He may have only replaced the power heads.)

Maybe we should get the whole story...from the beginning. Did the indirect ever work correctly? Why were all 3 zone valves replaced. The PHCC is not the model of the boilermate, refer to the manual. Help us and we'll help you figure it out.

Hi Paul, the zone valve that was replaced is same size as new one, I don't think that's it but I think I may have found the answer. Looking at the 2 wire that runs from the boilermate where the hot water zone was replaced the wire was scraped off on one side and when I move it around I can hear the valve clicking on and off so may be the problem. I'll put a new wire in and tighten all conections and see what happens.

All 3 zone vavles were replaced due to valves were sticking and I was burning out zone motors.

Thanks for your help!

Yeah that seemed to have been the issue, a chaffed wire leading from boilermate aquastat to control valve. After fixing the wire the hot water is back to normal..

Thanks everyone for your help, much appreciated!
