Shower Faucet - unusal sizing help needed

I recently moved into an older house and had the plumber change the shower head. He also suggested changing the hot/cold mixer which was surface mounted with a center lever. However, this one is 4.5" between the hot/cold pipes in the wall. All I seem to be able to find are ones that are 6". Anyone know where I can get one that will fit or if they is a way to convert it without chopping the wall/pipes etc. Any help would be appreciated...
