We bought the house (built in 2001) in early 2014 and have been dealing with black and brownish specks/flakes since that time. We are on well water. This only happens with hot water but it shows up in all the faucets. We had the hot water heater replaced about 8 months ago thinking it was probably the anode rod. But the problem is still there. The water system guys have been out a few times and said the water quality is great- it was their suggestion to replace the heater. It's definitely hard water though. Any advice or help would be really appreciated. A buddy is a plumber and said he's never heard of the problem before for someone not on city water.

What's in YOUR well? Have you consider a whole house filter or softener? What type of piping in your water system? Is it possible that metal degradation is the issue?
Best Wishes

We do have a filter and softening system. Cold water side is fine. Same faucet hot side puts the stuff out, cold doesn't. Pipes are PEX.
