cutting out pipe from existing gas line
Author: robbie9 (CA)

If I need to eliminate a section of gas pipe that is currently being used in a home, can I just shut off the propane tank ,and crawl under the house with a grinder, and cut the pipe , or do I need to blow out the gas first? Do I need to crack open a flex line somewhere, and blow compressed air in it to keep the sparks from the grinder from igniting the residual gas in the pipe. The pipe being cut out is a 3/4 inch pipe that's around 15 feet long. I think I can just turn off the gas and grind the pipe in half and wrench it out, but I thought it might be prudent to ask you guys first. Thanks.

i've never used a gringer but i have cut iron gas pipe with a sawzall with no problem.
as long as the gas is off and the pressure is relieved, the sparks will do no harm.
