I have read all the blogs people are posting. Here is my situation: I have a garbage disposal with a septic system. I am VERY careful not to put large food items or grease or oil down it. only minor crumbs. I did not know about hot water vs cold when running so that is good info. My disposal is constantly clogging requiring me to use it just when I am rinsing washed dishes. When I felt down into the disposal, it feels like there is a very thick layer of solid sludge on the bottom. Using a surgical glove and utensil, I managed to dig some of it up (black) but there is still quite a bit down there. When running the disposal, the motor sounds fine and water drains fine. But I feel I shouldnt have to run it just to drain water. My husband has read where we should NOT even have one or use it with a septic system. I grew up with both and my parents never had a problem. My husband wants to discontinue using the disposal completely and just leave it in. (Using a catch basket in the sink) I think it would start smelling if we dont remove it! Plus I cant get just water to drain out without using it. I would either want to replace it because maybe it is not even working properly?? Or just remove it and not have one at all. But it looks like some piping will have to be done in addition to removing. Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions? THANKS

since you only use it for crumbs, it serves no real purpose.
I would remove the unnecessary device and be done with the problem(s) it creates.
The 'repipe' is a simple under the sink affair.
ps. leave the electric safely 'wire nutted' in the wall box (for a future owner).

Your disposer is worn out, but the WORST thing you could do would to NOT run it periodically.
