 Prevent Freezing
Author: harveyshot (OK)

We are remodeling our bathroom and the new shower configuration will have a water line running into the attic to an overhead "waterfall" shower head. I haven't decided yet on what piping to use, PEX or copper, but I need to protect it from freezing. Should I use heat tape, regular pipe insulation or something else? I'm in central OK.

Thank you.

I drill thru thru the ceiling joist down pretty low and protect the pipe from nails via nail guards. Then you can get at least R38 insulation atop the pipe. You might be able to devise something to drain that line from inside the shower .

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll run the lateral section at a slight downhill slant so it drains when the water is shut off. I'll insulate the heck out of it also. I'm wondering if there is a diverter valve that will drain the vertical section of the overhead shower line when you switch to the wall shower head only.

if the horizontal pipe is kept close to the sheetrock ceiling with no insulation between it and the sheetrock so the warmth from the bathroom ceiling can get to it AND you have a big bunch of insulation on top of it, it won't freeze.
