noticed a black substance inside toilet on the bowl and under the rim. took off top and the overflow tube is filled with black sludge ... what is this and what can I do to stop it ? I suppose that is what the black stuff is inside my toilet... noticed our other toilet has the problem under the rim too. thanks for help...

my guess is that if the plumber can't pinpoint the source of the black gunk that a sample of it should be taken and sent to a testing lab ??

Check your aerators to see if the problem is system-wide or limited to the toilets. Some older flex connectors will deteriorate and produce a greasy black residue, as many water districts have switched from using chlorine to cloramine.
Is this city water or do you have a well? Calling a plumber and/or testing the water are the next steps.
