toilet running post fill valve replacement
Author: cgilly98 (FL)

My fill valve was leaking around the top, and the toilet level was not filling properly. I replaced the fill valve and float, which fixed the level problem in the bowl, but now my toilet level comes down (very slowly - like a quarter inch every two hours). The toilet starts to run after a few hours, and doesn't stop until it is flushed and refills. Is this maybe a problem with the refill tube being too long, or with the flapper (which I didn't touch)? Thanks in advance!

Chris

It could be either one, but without seeing it, we cannot tell you which, or even if it is both.

The refill tube should terminate above the overflow tube. It should not be placed into the overflow tube.

Assuming the refill tube is correct, you can add some dye(food coloring) to the tank which will show you if it is slowly leaking into the bowl.

Make sure the fill valve was installed correctly(read the instructions), in terms of the Critical Level (CL) vs the top of the the overflow tube vs the water level.

Thanks guys, I cut the refill line back to the top of the tube (it was into the tube) and it appears that has solved the problem. I will post more if it recurs.
