I want to perform my first sediment flush of our one year old water heater. I watched several videos about this on You Tube. Some videos indicate that all you really have to do is attach a hose and then open the flush valve. Other videos include steps like putting the water heater gas on pilot and closing the water inlet valve at the top and then opening the pressure relief valve during flushing. What do you people recommend? Thanks.

For an annual flushing leave the water on, electricity or gas on, just hook up a hose and turn the drain valve on. You want the water on so that it is forced via diptube to the bottom of the heater and will stir up any sediment.

so as not to waste energy:
turn heater 'fuel' off night before
take shower in morning using 'residual' hot water
leave 'fuel' off
connect hose to drain and 'power flush' heater until water runs clear
disconnect hose
turn 'fuel' on
