Neptune water meter and lightning strike
Author: purtellj (NY)

Could lighting striking my house near the water meter box on the outside of my house cause the meter to advance? The house is grounded to the main water line at the meter. My bill said we used 137 thousand gallons of water. Normal usage is around 19 thousand gallons.

Possible, yes. Probable, no. That is a lot of water you are using. Is it a condo, apartment or commercial unit?

It is a single family home. Two adults and one baby live here. Do laundry about 4 times a week 2-3 loads. Have a front load washer to conserve water. People from the water department came and inspected for leaks and found none. All three toilets work fine and do not run. I am having the meter tested tomorrow. I hope he finds something. The house next door has four adults and one child they also have a swimming pool and they used 30 thousand gallons for the same time period.

Consider "Going Radical" and log your water meter every 24 hours for a billing period. This way you will know how many gallons your meter is reading each day. Any chance someone is using your water, from the outside?
