I have a water heater that is approx. 12 yrs old. Just recently, we started experiencing a bad smell in the hot water. Replaced the anode rod but this was a temporary fix. Tried turning the heat up but this too was only a temporary fix. Any suggestions other than replacing the water heater??

Was your new anode made of magnesium or aluminum? A magnesium anode may cause odor.
Have you drained and refilled the water heater a few times to flush out any debris and stale water?
At 12 years old, you may want to replace the water heater anyway.

Dosing it with hydrogen peroxide will knock out the smell but maybe only short term.

The new Anode rod is magnesium. I have drained the water heater several times but the smell comes right back. I'm going to cut the rod off and flush the tank with Hydrogen Peroxide. Last resort is replacing the water heater.
