 Sink drain tail piece threads
Author: sum (FL)

I am curious, whenever I take apart the tailpiece from the bottom of existing lav drains, I almost never see any pipe dope or teflon tape on them. It is a threaded connection, the threads are fine threads.

Why?

I see some people would even apply dope on compression threads on angle valves when it's not technically necessary.

So why not something to help lubricate/seal the connection of the tailpiece?

I always seal the threads, usually with pipe dope.

Silicone caulk always works for me.

They will ALWAYS leak if some sealant is not used, regardless of whether you see the remnants of it or not.

I've always used PTFE (aka: "teflon"winking smiley thread sealing tape on threaded tailpieces.
