What did I get myself into? Went to clean my p-trap in my new place because of a slow drain. Found mixed PVC and metal piping underneath. Unscrewed the nuts and it turned out the pvc and metal weren't threaded together at all. In fact the PVC appears to be rough cut off and inset into the metal p-trap. Now I can't get the thing back together again without a leak where the PVC and the metal nut meets. Should I use some sort of plumbers putty or do I need to fully replace the PVC section of piping?

It sounds like you have "slip joint" connections and there should be a rubber/nylon washer under the nut, that compresses when the nut is tightened and creates a seal between the pipes.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, there is a very very small rubber washer, although it doesn't appear to be cracked or broken, it was inserted deeply in the grooves of the metal nut. I suppose I will have to get a new one...?

Yes, replace the washer. They get hard and don't re-seal properly.
