What is that whine in the bathroom?
Author: RedDog (IL)

For the last 12 hours there's been a high-pitched whine in our bathroom. I tried to find its source but was unable to pinpoint it. I turned off the main electric and the main water but neither stopped or even changed it. That seems impossible but it happened.

My wife was sitting on the toilet this morning cleaning the tub when it suddenly stopped. Reading on this website it seems others have had this problem and the toilet was the culprit.

How can it be that the whine continued even with the water shut off in the house? Do I need to replace the gizmo in the toilet tank to keep this from happening again?

IF it continued with the water shut off, and it was actually completely shut off, then the assumption would be that it was NOT a water problem.

What type of shut off valve is on the main? If it is a Gate valve or globe valve with a bad seat or washer, it may not have turned completely off. Was the valve a ball valve closed 90 degrees to flow?

Don't know what kind of main valve it is, but I do know there was no water coming out of open faucets while it was shut.

I'm beginning to think the toilet tank must be draining through an internal leak. That would continue until the tank was empty, I suppose. Anyway, as I said, it miraculously stopped on its own.
