Massachusetts does not allow AAV's. Can we seek a variance?
We are adding a half bath and tapping into the existing cast iron vent stack will require opening an exterior wall. According to plumber the placement of the stack is such that recip saw and grinder are just not possible. We really do not want to open the wall and even if we did, the plumber has also said it is not clear there is enough clearance between the existing CI pipe, the wall, and the framing to accommodate the new connection without additional tweaks once we open the wall! Easiest solution would be an AAV for the bathroom sink. Siimple right, but the inspector has said NO.
Any thoughts on what it takes to appeal an inspector's "ruling"?
Why is MA so backwards on the AAV thing?
Any suggestions on other solutions?
Can I build a bathroom without a sink?

Follow the rules, ask the inspector, you would need a code variance.
Not backwards, merely insuring the public's health and safety as AAVs, at best, stink (pun intended).
Soffit or chase to run vent pipe to attic, tie in there.
No, you MUST have a sink for hygiene purposes. DUH
Do it right or don't do it at all.
ps. I assume you were joking when you asked: 'Do I need a sink?'

name me something MA is not backwards at???
you can apply to the state board of inspectors for a variance. if they are in a good mood you might get one. they do charge $$$$ for applying.
