Irrigation - From brass to plastic impact sprinkler
Author: calisoldier83 (CA)

Hi guys,

I have a mountain face for a portion of my backyard. There is a water line that scales the top of mountain, there are currently three brass impact sprinklers that branch off to hit down at the foliage below. I just bought this house a couple months ago, but most recently noticed that two of brass sprinklers were clogged, which were on the ends of the water line. Each sprinkler has 15 inch galvanized pipe that attaches to the main line. The main line has mostly galvanized pipe, except one end is PVC, yet the it still branches off to a galvanized 15 inch.

The diagram below is a sketch of what I'm trying to say, the single lines represent galvanized pipe and the double line is PVC. The asterisks are the impact sprinkler.

I unclogged the side sprinklers, and now there isnt enough pressure to power all the impact sprinklers. I was thinking of converting them to plastic but I wanted to consult you guys for advice. With the plastic impact sprinklers, I'm not sure if you can screw plastic male threads into steel coupling? In some of the reviews I read it, it mentioned that the plastic got damaged when doing this.

I also wanted to mention that the piping is currently 1/2 in and each 15" branches off line has a female coupling. The couplings seem to have fused to the pipes. I already replaced one of pipes since the coupling was deteriorated.

I'm not sure what combo would work best in this situation. The plastic impact sprinklers are 3/4 in and would need a converted coupling (1/2 to 3/4). Should I replace all the 15" steel lines with PVC or keep as is and use PVC couplings, if those exist? Or replace all the 15" pipes with PVC?

I was thinking this might be my best solution and I'd just have switch out the couplings (if I could get them off) with this:

Is there anything I should take note of if I do use PVC with the steel pipe?

Sorry, for my ignorance on this, let me know if you need anything else to help visualize.

your big concern is cracking the female portion of that adapter. it might be safer to use a metal reducing coupling (3/4 x 1/2) and a 1/2 inch male adapter.

Thanks I went with the 1/2 pvc adapter. Do I put teflon tape on the joint from steel to pvc and the pvc to the sprinkler?
