 gas hot water tank

water is not getting hot consistantly. one day we will have hot water one day it will be lukewarm one day it will be cold. what could cause this?

before you go trying to diagnose a problem that may or may not be there, flush the heater well. see if that helps..

Sounds like it may likely be the thermostat. Those usually just screw right into the the tank. Google "how to test gas water heater thermostat" and "how to replace gas water heater thermostat"

without knowing much about your heater i would initially look at your gas control valve if it is an atmospheric vent model or like previous said thermostat if it is powervent,
