I bought a house 6mo ago and discovered that one of the toilets spontaneously starts running once every 2-3hrs to top off the tank. There is no water leaking out of the toilet onto the floor, so my first thought was that water was leaking from the tank to the bowl. I tried changing both the flapper and the flapper assembly, but this had no effect on the problem. I'm not sure where else the water could be going. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
Carl

How far is the small refill tube inserted into the overflow pipe? It should terminate ABOVE the top of it.

If the problem is not fill valve siphonage (see above post), then try another different flapper. One style flapper may work where others fail.

food coloring in the tank will tell you if it is the flapper leaking by.
if no colored water shows up in the bowl then it has to be the refill tube.

I will add just make sure that you wipe off the Flush Valve seat when you install your flapper. Stuff can grow on that seat and cause small leak through.

The refill tube sucks the colored water out of the tank so that will not give an answer.

The NEXT flush valve seat I wipe off when changing a flapper will be my FIRST one. I have never done it.

I use my thumb to wipe the seat down. When a flapper ultra-deteriorates, it will begin to leave rubber residual on the seat. If it isn't removed, the new flapper may not seal.

hi, yes im going with packy, your fill tube going into the flush valve is probably auto siphoning because its too long. If you cut it down the siphoning should stop.
