 Toilet Gurgles
Author: Janetbucher (NY)

Hi folks, We have 2 toilets, one each on 1st and 2nd floors. When the 2nd floor toilet is flushed the downstairs toilet gurgles. This has been going on for some time, but recently it happens with such force the water in the bowl splashes out!
We are on a public sewer and have had problems with tree roots growing and blocking the sewer line. If it backs up in basement the city will come and clear it with a pole and then it drains. We have not had it back up in a few years.
Any ideas!
Thanks for any help!

you now have a partial stoppage 'downstream' of the lower toilet

yeah, get the city back out to clear the stoppage with a pole.
after it is clear, put some root killer chemical down the drain monthly to help keep the roots from coming back.

If the pole doesn't do the job permanently, then you should have a Rooter company run their circular saw to cut the roots to the edge of the pipe, then put your root killer in the drain. If you have a clean out near your property line or near the street, you could put a balloon down in the combination and when it is inside the horizontal line pump it up to block the drain. Then add your root killer to the drain and let is sit for the required length of time in the label to kill the roots. I think as long as the source of the roots is there, you will be cleaning this sewer line each year. Good luck.

I feel that Ur toilets don't have anti syphon pipes. Whenever the system drains it also tends to force the air in the pipes to also flush out thus creating a negative pressure. In order to compensate for this negative pressure vent pipe is always provided so that the pressure equilibrium could be maintained and at the same time your water seal in your drain remains intact. So may be u shud ask Ur Plumber to point out if the venting is provided at all or not, or to cross check if something is obstructing the Air Admittance Valve which is also installed in the drain as alternative.
