Toilet leaks even with water shut off
Author: mferrigno (CT)

I have a toilet from hell!

I'm installing a new toilet in a room where the flange is nearly flush with the floor, but even after using 2-3 different wax rings, all of which are extra large (I even tried stacking them), my toilet still leaks from the bottom onto the floor.

The really odd thing about this leak, is that it occurs even after my water is shut off. This seems to indicate that the leak is not with the wax ring seal, since it leaks even when there is no water running to that part of the toilet.

Is my toilet cracked? I'm not sure what to do and I'd hate to install yet another wax ring only to have the thing leak yet again.

Help!

Check closely for a leak, under the tank, where the tank to bowl bolts are. Flush the toilet and after it refills, shut off the water supply. Mark the water level in the tank and the bowl and see it either one drops down.

IT could also be a defect in the bowl, but there is no way for us to tell. You have to remove the toilet and carefully inspect the bottom of it. I once had one with a "minisclue" hole in it and I had to shove a broom straw through it to detetermine if it went all the way through, which it did.

if it is leaking from the tank to bowl bolts/gasket then if the shut off is closed the water in the tank will lower itself.
if there is a defect in the bowl (as hj mentions) then the water in the bowl will go down overnight.
as for the wax ring problem...
get a closet flange extension kit to raise the height of the flange properly.
