i have a toto toilet that we have been using for 8 years, but now when we flush, the toilet flushes, and then although the water and waste seems to go down, it does approximately what sounds like 5 subsequent smaller flush sounds before it stops. What does this mean?

no, didn't seem like flapper issue. Do you think that could be the cause?

flapper seems ok. flush is fine and all water goes down immediately upon flush. the spill is sparodic, fills in spurts. i am thinking a need a new ant-siphon valve. tube from valve is clear.
