 Water hammer/noisy water lines
Author: Oldteacher (CO)

my son and I are doing a bathroom remodel. We have bathroom gutted to the 2x4's and are installing everything new. We have installed the new tub with new shower valve and shower head. Before we closed up the wall with drywall and Did the tiling, we thought we check for leaks and anything else that my surprise us. When we turned on the water to the shower head, the water hammer was so loud, we thought there was a drive-by going on a outside! We have googled and followed some of their suggestions about still, there is no improvement. We have not installed the toilet nor the sink yet so, right now, all the water pressure is going to the shower. Our question is: since the other pieces are not installed and all the water pressure going to the shower, will the water hammering stop when those pieces are installed since the water pressure will be reduced because water will then be going to those pieces? (This is like having high pressure in lawn sprinklers because of too few sprinkler heads so the more heads, the lower the water pressure, make sense?). I look forward to your reply.

Sounds like you have not purged all the air out of the lines. You should only be checking for leaks at this stage. Install the drywall and paint and then cut the stub outs to install your angle stops. Then you can purge all of the air out of the lines. Before you button up be sure you have all pipe insulated, isolated with felt or similar material and strapped so as to have no movement. This should prevent the air hammer. If the above action does not solve the problem you can install a Tee and install a small water hammer device under your sink or at the water closet angle stop where many times a quick closing valve will cause a water hammer.

thank you for your advice. I am not a plumber and do not know what "angle stops" are. Please advise. Thanks again.
