 Sand for Pipe Bedding
Author: Andrea (NJ)

I need to order sand for laying an underground PVC waste pipe in an outdoor trench. Does it matter which kind of sand I use? Should I order "Dead Sand"? My other choices are "Yellow Sand", "Concrete Sand", "Mason Sand," and "Caribbean White", which looks nice for a backyard beach, and it's expensive so it would be a waste to bury it underground. Dead Sand is the cheapest, so I'm hoping that's the right choice.

How about some good ole Jersey shore sand?

the reason for the sand is that they don't want any sharp rocks laying against the plastic pipe. the sharp rock could wear a hole in the pipe.
hence, they require fill that has no rocks. this translates to sand. the cheapeast kind you can find, like masonary sand, will be OK.

Did "dead sand" spend some time in the trunk of a black Cadillac?
