Need help sizing an effluent pump
Author: mike411 (GA)

I'll try to keep this short.

My county installed grinder pumps at our house before we bought it. The pump has died. It was installed downstream of a septic tank. I have opened the grinder pit cover many times and have never seen any "solids". From what everyone has told me, since I'm only pumping gray water, I just need an effluent pump. I need help sizing a replacement effluent only pump. I've really tried to figure it out online but just can't.

Here's all the particulars. If I omit anything let me know.

4 foot lift from bottom of pit to discharge opening.

100 feet of 1 1/4 pvc from pit discharge connection to street edge. Could be another 15 feet to pressurized city sewer connection. The entire run is downhill with a 15-20 foot change in elevation.

I have 1) 90 deg elbow, 2) check valves, 2) pvc ball valves. All 1 1/4"

Need to have a pump capable of creating 30-45psi to push into cities pressurized main according to their official.

Can anybody help?

You could contact your county regarding the pumps they supply. They might have a special price dealing with the local plumbing provider. You could pull the dead pump and look for specifications. An effluent pump is better to have, anytime any solids that pop up in your systems.

I always defer to the engineering department of a pump manufacturer.
myers make excellent pumps.
contact them directly with your specs.

yea first of all you are pumping full waste and not grey water if it is downstream of your septic tank, secondly if you are pumping into a pressurized city main i am afraid that you have to go back in with a grinder, and yes you absolutely need to contact the water authority for that area because it's a good chance that your pump is covered under warranty, in my area homeowners pay 1 price for grinder (and yes it's a whopper) but it is then covered for like 25 years on replacement or repair.

You will get pumps to fulfil your needs. In my point of view, if you are pumping waste water then it is better of your septic tank. For more information, you need to contact the water authority of that area. For more details: TG Waste Water
