I'm just wondering if it is necessary to replace the entire moen valve or just the cartridge. I just bought the house and am going to install tile so it won't be accessible for long. It's not leaking but I'm sure it's all original parts, 15 years old. I'm going to replace the cartridge but I want to know if the whole thing needs to be cut out and replaced, or does that last forever? Thanks!

I've been using Moen in my home for over 40 years. You should only have to replace the cartridge. When you do, if it is an older model, get a 3/4" copper cleaning brush and clean the opening when you remove the old cartridge. Use a spray bottle of water to flush it out and after applying a little plumbers grease for potable water, insert your new replacement valve. Be sure you install the correct cartridge and I recommend that you do not use a knock off cartridge, use a genuwine Moen replacement. Installed properly as above, it will last for years.

Nless it is a Moentrol or Positemp valve, it SHOULD be replaced with a pressure balanced version, which is now required by code.
