Had a new under mount sink installed. The drain pipe was not aligned so we used a flex pipe to align it to the drain hole. When we connected the drain plug to the sink the sink ended up cracking after about a week (small crack by the drain hole). Is this solely because the drain was tightened too much or would the misaligned drain pipe have anything to do with it?

I can't imagine what kind of sink would crack from tightening a drain assembly. whatever it is, it must be poor quality.

I'm having a little trouble with this then because the granite people that installed it told me this is the reason the sink cracked. Any advice what to do?

A flexible drain tailpiece is not a proper way to hook up any fixture. But no, it would not crack the sink. If you bought it at a home center just take it back and they will give you a new one. They'll take anything back.

I bought the sink through the granite people and they are making me buy a new sink because they said the reason it's cracked is the drain was tightened too much.

I have never been able to over tighten a sink drain simply due to the fact that it will strip the fine threads on the drain if you try. I would find it far more likely that someone dropped the sink and installed it anyway knowing it was cracked.

Even if you bought it through them there should still be a manufacturer of it, if it's a reputable brand I bet you can contact them directly and ask if their sink can be cracked by tightening too much on a drain. Unless they bought it from some fufu factory from China with no names.

Is this a bathroom or kitchen sink. If it is a bathroom sink, they are probably saying that tightening the drain cracked it because of the thin area around the overflow connection. That CAN happen, but it is always because of a bad sink.
