 gold colored sand
Author: jkriegel (WI)

We rent our home and can't get into contact with our landlord. The water softener was extremely low. I just put 3 , 40lb bags in but there is gold colored "flakes" that feels like silica sand. And now when I turn on the foucet it barley drips out. When we flush the toilet the gold stuff is in there as well. I'm a single mom of 2 little kids. I'm pretty hand but don't know what to do and can't find a lot on line. Should I just call a plumer? The water softener company? Please, any help would be great. Thank you!

I don't do anything with softeners, so I can't advise on that, but the faucets I can help you with. Unscrew the aerator off the end of the faucet spout and turn on the water to flush the line out. rinse all the debris off the aerator and reinstall it.

You might want to put the softner in bypass mode until you get someone to look at it. There should be 2 valves right at the top of the softner , turn both of those 90 degrees and it will be in bypass mode, that will keep the media from blocking the aerators.

Yor softerner is "broken" and the gold sand is the resin from it. Put the softener in bypass mode either by turning the two valves on the pipes going in to it, or pushing the large button on the manifold that says "push for bypass". the resin will have to be flushed out of the system and it will probably clog some of the faucets and toilet fill valves. This process can be very time consuming, depending on the types of faucets you have, because the material can keep clogging them up even after you clean them out.
