 Toilet vent location
Author: dabnug (CO)

Hi,

Im currently trying to validate my design for my bathroom. I've attached a picture of what I plan to drop in place for the toilet, but unfortunately the sink drink runs right under then spot so I cant show it in place. I know that you cannot use ABS and PVC without a mech joint but I didnt have the 2" ABS handy and I figured a picture is easier to interpret than a drawing.

My question is if this vent will meet the code. In the IPC 2009 it says I can have my vent 12' from the trap for an 1/8" slope on 3" PTrap. Since the PTrap is internal to the toilet and this vent is on the sink drain line, does this still count? I want to do this project correctly for myself and for the inspector.

Thanks for the help.

If the kitchen sink is vented you don't need that vent tee you show in the picture, the toilet will be wet vented with the kitchen sink, The wye is where you get the distance from the trap to the vent, looks like about 30".

The kitchen sink is a good 30' from the wye you mentioned. Does this still work?

From IPC2009, can you explain how section 906 applies to this fixture then? Table 906.1 in states for a 3" trap with slope 1/8" per ft, the max distance from fixture to vent is 12'. The sink vent is 30 feet away at least.

The exception to rule 906.1 states, the developed length of the fixture drain from the trap weir to the vent fitting for self-siphoning fixtures, such as water closets, shall not be limited.

If your plumbing terminology is as weak as mine, here is a few links to help interpret that statement.

Still not 100% clear, but as I understand it, the exception states that because the drain pipe of the stack connects below the lowest point of the trap self-siphoning will exist and as such the toilet will not need its own protecting vent.

you are misinterpreting the code. the vent starts at the 3 x 2 "Y" which is only 15 inches away from the toilet.
if you can, roll the "Y" up and put a street 22 in it.
NOW, go have a cold drink of your choice and enjoy a rockies game..
