I have purchased a home in AZ and was told by two homeowners when I leave (for extended period of time such as several months) put food wrap over the toilet. I understand the part about evap of the waterin the trap and then the possibility of sewer gas entering the home. The second part baffled me was about keeping the toilet from cracking. Will the dryness and heat actually dry out the pours in the ceramic to cause this? Is there cause for alarm or just a tale to tell a gullible newcomer?

Do not fret over the ceramic drying out....it doesn't happen.

It may be a great prank to get you to come back and use the toilet without remembering there is plastic wrap on it..

pour some vegetable oil on top of the water to greatly slow down the evaporation process.

Since ALL the traps in the house will lose their seals due to evaporation, the toilet is only a minor factor. Pour RV antifreeze in all the fixtures to make a permanent seal until you return and run water in the drains to flush it out.
