Sewer odor gas inside the building
Author: GB28 (CA)

Hello,

I am investigating a couple of issues with the plumbing waste and vent system in a building.

It is a two-storey building that has a core restroom. the toilets for the men's and women's restrooms are floor mounted and sharing a common wet wall chase to run the water and vent piping.

First Issue: When you flush the water closet on the women's restroom, the water seal to the water closet on the men's restrooms goes down. All the vent pipes were replaced and size appropriately. We have not check if there's any issue with the waste line yet.

Second issue: Strong sewer gas smells inside the space and only occurs at around 7-7:30 pm and last for 30 mins. then it disappears. there is no smell during day time. it only occurs at that exact time. I got information that the waste line is draining to a sewer pit with no vent. the sewer pit is more that 200 feet away from the building.

I would like to ask your help if you have encountered this kind of situation from your experience with the plumbing system.

thanks,

You say, "Second issue: Strong sewer gas smells inside the space and only occurs at around 7-7:30 pm and last for 30 mins. then it disappears. there is no smell during day time. it only occurs at that exact time. This must be a commercial restroom and someone or something is flushing at the same time each day that uses enough water to siphon water from traps, maybe floor drains. This is my guess with the limited info you have provided. But this could be a cause for odor in the restrooms.

Thank you for your response.

There is a core restroom on the first floor and second floor. do you think that a clogged vent pipe cause the burping or siphoning of the water seal at the water closet.

They replaced the clogged vent to each plumbing fixtures on the first floor. They also replaced the vent riser where the vent pipes for the first floor and second floor plumbing fixtures connects.

They did not check if there's any clogged on the vent pipes on the second floor plumbing fixtures.

Will that cause siphoning of the water seals to the traps connected to that waste and vent system?
