I have 35ppm water hardness. Softener was in place when I got here and I had to replace it once.... but I really don't know what happens without one. It also costs $$ to operate in both salt and water and my time in maintenance.
What happens with that level of hardness if I went without a softener?
What if the softener went down for repair for a couple of weeks, is my plumbing system in peril if it does?

35 ppm/ 17.1= 2 grains per gallon (gpg). Not extremely hard; I think it would be labeled moderately hard. No, your system is not in peril if you take it off-line. You will notice a slow build up of chalkiness on your tubs/showers/faucets but it is easily removed with cleaning products for that purpose. I suppose in time your water heater will produce scale build-up but that too can be flushed with a scale remover.
