I know this is impossible to diagnosis over internet, but I am at least hoping to get some ideas....
I have a fleck 5600. I noticed during the rinse cycle I am getting some sort of knocking/hammer from a pipe in the vicinity. The noise is not occurring at the fleck valve nor is it occurring at the check valve in the brine tank.
Its kinda of a rhythmic thumping during a portion of that rinse cycle... and its intermittent. It also doesn't occur with the closing of a valve. Taking the softener out of the equation by running water normally from fixtures does not produce the same sound. I do not hear the thumping originating from the water heater or the water meter either.
Im assuming its a cold water pipe and its in a wall somewhere....
so far all I can do is try to hold/isolate copper pipes while its doing it and I cannot stop or dampen the sound while doing that. Some of the pipes in my system are a bit loose others are quite rigid thru building members.
Since the softener goes off in the middle of the night, I cant say if this is a new sound or something that always has occurred but I slept thru.
How would you start to find the cause of this? Looks to be a wild goose chase for me unless I get some ideas.

The noise may be associated with the drain plumbing rather than the water plumbing.

Its not associated with the drain as the backwash drains to a sump pit.
How would you troubleshoot noise like this if called out on a service call?

The drain water is conveyed via a pipe on its way to the sump and that is what I refer to.

I was just thinking that...however, the noise is intermittent so its not making any noise for some of the cycles that water would be flowing thru that drain piping. That drain piping is also not really in the proximity of the sound.
In your opinion do you think the culprit is a pipe to loosely or not at all strapped to the building or a pipe that is too rigidly strapped?
also
When a softener regenerates, I am assuming it goes into bypass.... I wonder how much of my piping is isolated during that time where there wouldn't be velocity/pressure in the lines to even make the noise?

If the terminal of the drain pipe is lower than the softener valve, it could be siphoning and 'gulping' air which could explain the noise you're hearing.
