 gas shut off
Author: valarie (PA)

Hi,
Contrary to popular opinion I am a fairly smart middle aged woman and know a fair amount about home repairs....BUT.... I am trying to turn off a gas shut off valve. I am removing an old gas dryer and installing an electric dryer.
The house was built in 1976 so the lines are not that old.
It is a knob type valve, no lever, and I have loosened the screw and it will not budge. Which way do I turn it? How much force can you use. I don't want to break anything and explosions are a tad nasty!
Any help would be very appreciated!

Do you have any appliances that have pilot lights? If not, turn off the gas at the meter and then see what you can do with this valve.

If you post a photo, you might get more specific suggestions.

hard to say which way to turn the valve. there is some sort of 'stop' built into the valve but with out seeing it i can't say.
hard to see but on the bottom of this vale there is a slot just above the washer. there is a pin on the shaft of the valve that will stop the rotation when it hits the end of that slot. yours is probably similar.
also there is an indicator line on the square head. it tells open/closed.

"Knob type valves" are almost NEVER used for gas lines, so i am not sure what you are working with. In addition, especially with gas, you should NEVER have to "loosen" anything to turn the valve off.
