Hi,
I just tuned up the vintage 1967 PF 3 valve shower set. I changed the washers and tightened all 3 packing nuts since there was a lot of water running out the knobs.
Leaks are gone. Leaky knobs are gone. Yet even when the shower diverter is all the way open, water still pours out of the tub spout as well. I thought that would have been resolved.
How do I fix that?
Thanks!

The center handle diverts water up to the shower and it is letting water pass. Either the seat or the washer is bad would be my guess.

I think I also once had an issue, that diverter body must seal to the valve housing at both the nylon washer and also at the diverter threads and there was a problem with the thickness of the nylon, not being thick enough to seal and against the faucet body?

Thanks, I'll have a look. Is the stem assembly different for the diverter?

The diverter is a "double seated valve" so it MUST seal to the internal stop at the same time it makes contact with the valve body. IF the original body gasket did not come out with the old stem, and you have two of them there, that would do it.

I got a new stem assembly, checked and there are no double washers, and made sure the seat is fine again and the new one leaks worse than the old.
Where do I turn?

Does the taper of the stem tip seat 360* into the nylon washer?

The plastic washer behind the tapered area of the stem is flat. The stem does seat into it, but it just catches the edge of the washer since there's no taper. I thought that was very strange.

Did you replace the seat as well as the stem? There is no point in doing one without the other.

Yes - everything but the cast body and knobs are new. Still having the problem.
Any other thoughts are appreciated.

Call Price Phister and find out where you can get an OEM diverter stem locally. Other than the seat and stem there is nothing else that can go wrong with it.
