Under mount sink garbage disposal question
Author: TomV (MD)

We are considering installing a granite counter top with an under-mount stainless steel sink when we remodel our kitchen and are wondering if the sink will support the weight of a garbage disposal. My concern is that the garbage disposal is heavy and there is some torque when it is turned on. Is there any information anywhere that talks about installing a disposal on under-mount sinks? Can it even be done?

i've done the plumbing for a few dozen undermount sinks with disposers. i've only seen one fail and the sink pulled away from the granite. all the others have been fine and lasted many, many years.
your question is a good one but my experience is they are fine..
i've seen cast iron sinks mounted from below but they had 2 x 4's run sideways for bracing.
just make sure the silicone holding the sink has had at least overnight to set up well.

Some of the better granite installers use a wire harness or metal brackets to support the sink, in addition to a continuous bead of silicon caulk underneath the granite. Almost all of the undermount sinks I plumb include a disposal. A properly installed sink will have no problem supporting a disposal.

When installed correctly, your undermount sink will be sealed with silicone caulk and secured to the granite underside with mechanical fasteners.

I have never had a problem with under mount sinks and disposers. The one thing I do not like about them is the seam between the granite and the sink will start growing mold and mildew in short order and is a pain to try and clean, and the more you scrub it (using a toothbrush) the more you damage the caulk. I would much rather use a high quality Cast iron or stainless steel drop in. Who wants their dishes cleaned in a petri dish?

Around here is it almost ALWAYS done, because most sinks have disposers in them.
