 pipe replacement slope question
Author: ddbbp (KS)

If your replacing a horizontal portion (in this case 5' of 4" CI) underground with PVC. Will the PVC be the same size and produce the same slope as the piece you are replacing?

In other words, the pipe being replaced is thru a cement wall horizontally. Using the same hole in the concrete and coupling onto the old pipe that would not have any play/movement up or down, does the PVC replacement line up and produce the same slope as before?

Or does the hole have to be altered to accommodate the change in material?

there were different grades of cast iron pipe and fittings. ranging from extra heavy ( thickest and largest outside diameter) to medium and then to standard. (maybe another i forgot about?)
OD was not a concern as the spigot end of the pipe was inserted into a hub with oakum and lead.
anyway, the PVC may have a slightly larger OD or it may be the same. what is important is to concentrically line the cast and the PVC.
you may need to shave the hole in the cement wall to get the PVC thru.
