 acid neutralizer
Author: Dave from Danbury (WI)

I am considering adding an acid neutralizer to my well water system which has an existing PH of approximately 6.5.

We already have a water softener and would prefer that the water softener remove more of the iron in the water. I understand the acid neutralizer will permit the water softener to remove more iron from the water. We only soften the hot water used in the bathrooms, dishwasher and clothes washer.

We like the existing flavor of our water and are concerned as to whether or not the addition of the acid neutralizer will have any negative affect on the flavor of the cold (drinking) water.

How much iron are you trying to remove? Is your unit capable of removing it? Most water softener manufacturers specify up to 1 ppm iron removal. A neutralizer can assist in removing ferric iron, and by boosting the water pH and neutralizing the water, enable the softeners effectiveness in iron removal.

As for water taste, each case is different. If the taste is altered, you can opt for reverse osmosis.

I understand that a water softener can remove up to 10 PPM of iron but the water must be PH neutral for it to work properly. Our water has only 2 or 3 PPM.
