3 Valve tub replacement

OK, kids shower started leaking real bad so I shut off the water and bought a set of 3 tub valves. I already knew it was going to need replaced. I took apart the old ones, they are mostly plastic stems that had a metal tube that screwed onto the main valve. The new ones are brass and are supposed to screw "INTO" the valve but there are no threads inside, just outside. I hope I am making sense. I obviously don't know much about plumbing. Can anyone help?

Author: North Carolina Plumber (NC) You have the wrong stems. Easiest thing to do is take one of the old stems with you and go to a plumbing supply store or home improvement store and see if you can find a match.

Author: hj (AZ) You cannot just buy ANY "3 valve stems" and replace them. YOu need new ones EXACTLY like the old ones.
