 water heater nipple
Author: 4ripley2 (SC)

I'm replacing a water heater. Used to have a tall 60'' and now installing a medium 42". The existing pipes obviously are too tall to reach top of medium tank. Went to lowes and they advised me to extend nipple to tank for easiest way to reach pipes. Currently the in/out pipes are Pex. The advised me to get another galvaized nipple and using a brass fitting to connect new galvanized nipple to existing water heater nipple with brass fitting. Is there any issues with doing this? Having a extra long nipple and any problems using the galvanized pipe with brass coupling?
Thanks,
Not experienced and wanting to learn

better would be use brass nipples and couplings. Galvanized will rust eventually.
lots of ways to correctly connect pipes. post pic when done here for opinions.

Thanks! Will look for brass nipples. But you see no issue in extending nipples longer? Just want to be sure.
Thanks!

why not use a flexable connector. they make different lengths and different ends. there is one that will screw onto the heater nipple and sharkbite on the top.
sponsor has a good variety...

Raise the heater on cinderblocks. It keeps it off the floor and prevents rusting if water gets underneath.
