I have some sort of deposit on the pipe that comes from the disposal. I wiped some of it off but it would take a knife or chisel to get the rest off. It seems to be coming from both ends of where that curly pipe is attached. Does anyone know what it is and what is causing it? I don't think there is a leak, I've never noticed water there.

Appears to be mineral deposits left behind by a MINISCULE leak. (water evaporates before it can actually drip)

Try 'snugging down' the large trap nut. If it moves, wait and see.

If not, disassemble, clean the faces and retighten.

Mineral deposits from seepage of the joints. I would remove the trap, "curly" pipe and reseal the 2 joints.

I would use my thumb and push firmly into the middle of the area with the deposits. If it flexes or breaks now, you just saved yourself a lot of damage later. If not, clean it up with mild soap and water and reseal like Bernabeu suggests. I have seen deposits like that after someone used a drain cleaner and it destroyed the brass internally.

i'm with KC on this. I would just loosen the 2 chrome nuts, remove the trap and replace it.it is a very quick job. the new trap does not need the cleanout plug on the bottom as it is removable.
