I have a single hand shower equipped with Valley plumbing parts. I have to practically rotate the handle through its entire travel to get hot water. Apparently this is a mixing problem. If so, what part should I order and how do I get it? I don't have a lot of plumbing experience so I would appreciate it very much if I could get instructions on how to make this repair. The house was built in 1996. Thanks.

A little background info please. Have you lived in this dwelling for a while and this "problem" has gotten worse over time, OR have you recently moved in and noticed this phenomena which is not "right" in your opinion?
You have OFF, COLD, WARM, and HOT. You turn the single handle to make these states of temperature occur. What is the problem?

The temperature is actually controlled by a knob. According to the color diagram on the shower plate, the temperature should gradually change from cold(blue) to hot(red) as the knob is rotated in a counter-clockwise fashion. This is not what happens. I don't start feeling warm water until I have rotated the knob counter- clockwise almost far as I can. I do get warm enough water as this point to shower but I am almost out of control. It has to be a mixing issue. This has been a day one situation since I move into my house 10 years ago.

The "color diagram" is some designers idea of how it "might" work, but has little bearing on how the temperature will actually vary from cold to hot.

I would guess that it assembled 180 degrees off and that there is a temperature stop that is limiting the hot water temperature to prevent scalding. You should call the manufacturer. The plumber who put the faucet in probably removed the cartridge when soldering in the unit and reinstalled it incorrectly.
