Hi all. Wife wanted a larger hot water heater. We have a 50 gallon forced air exhaust (correct term?). Went to Home Depot found a 75 gallon. Asked the Home Depot guy if the blower on the old one could be moved over to the new he said if it's working well sure. So I brought the rheem xg75t06st76u0 home and got it tot the basement. It's heavy! Haven't had time to do anything but tonight I started to look and read. So the question is do I have to bring it back?! Can I convert it tot the PV version? Is there more than just the blower that bolts on to the top(circuit board). I'm not happy that the Home Depot guy didn't tell me to buy the one with the power vent on it already. What's can I do? Any suggestions would be helpful. I'm thinking I have to find a way to return it....

Of course you have to return the one you bought. There is more to a power vented water heater than just the blower. The circuit board also controls the gas valve.
You do deserve credit for resourcefulness in attempts to save money.

just curious..
could the gas valve be removed from the old PV water heater and installed onto the new tank?
i know there is some kind of negative pressure switch involved as well.
but, if this new heater were the last one in the world could it be converted ???
and, if done properly would it be dangerous ?
BTW, i once had an older bronco 2. the heater core leaked so i cut it out and stuck a copper heating element from an old convector under the dashboard. connected some hose barb fittings to the heater hoses and had a minimal amount of heat.

Your car conversion would only make you uncomfortable if it did not work. THe heater could KILL you if it malfunctioned. The mechanism from the old heater MIGHT work if you changed EVERYTHING except the tank, but even then you could have mechanical problems when you turned it on. By the time you got done you may have wished you bought the proper heater and you could wind up with a 500# piece of trash that you cannot use or return.

i guess rather than trying ot convert to a power vent i would drill holes in the side of the tank and install electric elements.
what do ya'll think bernbeau ?
