 Disintegrated bathtub drain blocking threads
Author: Fujiview (NJ)

Bathtub drain assembly essentially came apart so half of it is still screwed in, blocking the threads so I can't just screw in a new drain. Is there something that can be tried short of having to replace the shoe (which would be an access nightmare)? Thanks.

If the top part of the drain is gone, then carefully scoring the inside and prying a wedge inward should be fairly easy, albeit time consuming. Keep in mind that the seal is made with a gasket at the top of the shoe, and not the threads, so even if they are scored slightly, it doesn't matter. Patience and persistence pays off in this case.

If the spud is that rotten, I would think that the rest of the assembly is not far behind. Time to consider a new waste? Torquing and prying on it may do it in completely.

Thanks for the prompt reply! Yes, the top part is gone. I was thinking of hack sawing to the thread, which sounds like your suggestion.

It's just the spud (drain) that's messed up. Everything beyond that seems solid. Shoulda just been a no-brainer - screw in a new drain and be done with it, but nothing's ever easy.
