 Toilet Whine Issue
Author: jenmcnitt (MN)

We had a new toilet installed last fall, and ever since we've had an issue where the toilet gives a short whine for a couple seconds after the water in the tank fills.

What is odd is that it does not make this noise if the top of the tank is off. It seems to make the noise more when the tank top is pushed toward the back. For example if you lean back when seated and the top slides back a little. Sometimes it still makes the noise no matter how the top is seated but always does not when the top is off.

It doesn't matter if the toilet seat is up or down.

The plumber who installed the toilet replaced the fill valve, but that did not solve the issue.

Any other thoughts? Thanks!

Has anyone checked the water pressure in the house? I have seen fill valves that seem to make noise when they are at the end of filling due to high pressure, but never one that was positional with the tank lid. If it truly is positional, then there is something wrong with the fill valve; it may be adjusted too high and the tank lid is hitting it. If you take the tank lid off and get a stick/board/ruler perhaps and lay it across the top of the tank, how close is the top of the fill valve to touching the board? Can you post a picture of the back of the tank so we can see the fill valve?

Make sure top of ballcock below highest point in tank, buy a water pressure gage ( $8 - $15) and screw to your back hose bib. Pressure needs to be below 80 PSI, If not call a state licensed master plumber to install and/or replace.
BTW- I had a vision...You said when you lean back while seated? Please remember this isn't last boy recliner and pls keep your feet off the wall. LOL You will crack the tank/bowl connection...

Of course now the toilet is not whining. We have the tank lid pushed all the way forward as far as it can go and this seems to have helped.

Still seems like a strange issue.

Make sure the lid is not pinching the fillvalve supply. Allwaterplumbing.com
