save on water bills with pressure regulator
Author: Rwaters55 (NY)

Hi All
I want to know if I can really save on my water bills if I install a pressure regulator? I've heard mix things like it can save 30% or it is not worth the cost to have it installed.
Thoughts?

Filling a tub or sink you will not save any money. Other uses you MAY save a little bit, but NOT 30%, because uses, such as a shower, the flow is controlled and is independent of the pressure.

The only time it would really save any water is if you had an irrigation system that had a time control. The flow rate would be reduced, and the time would stay the same so the overall usage would be reduced. Other than that, you will never see any difference.

Do you have excessive water pressure (above 80 psi)? Then a pressure reducing valve would be required by code.

But if you're contemplating one just to lower your water bill, as others stated, it would only have a minimal effect. Instead, for water savings, install low water consumption toilets (either 1.6 gallons per flush or 1.28 gallons per flush, with a quality brand such as Kohler or Toto), and install low water consumption shower heads and faucet aerators.
