 Whole House Filter
Author: crapin (NC)

I am looking for a whole house water filter that includes a backwash system. I am on a well and currently have a whole house filter that requires a new filter about every 6 weeks. I need to get away from the recurring filter changes. We have a 3 bedroom 2.5 bath home and only my wife and I so water usage is low. I have tested the water and we do not have issues other than sediment.

Are you sure you need backwashable as opposed to spin down?

washable = $1-2000

spin = $1-200

Spin-Down Sediment Model Filters make solid particle removal simple and economical. The most attractive features of the Spin-Down & Sediment Trapper filters are their ability to be cleaned and reused.

He wants an automatic system that does not have to be taken apart every so often. Most places that sell water softeners also sell the filters he is looking for.

does not need to be 'taken apart often' merely 'blown down' into a bucket periodically (while water on and pressurized)

I think what the OP wants is to get away from having to go "mess" with filtration maintenance. A spin down sediment trap will still require frequent visits to the basement or crawlspace to "blow down" the sediment. In addition, even when the "sediment chunks" are blown down, there will be "fines" that will clog the mesh screen that will need to be washed out every so often. He could plumb in a garden hose type programmable battery operated timer (usually used for irrigation systems) to handle the periodic blow down, but they would still need to visually inspect the filter screen for buildup periodically, and also replace batteries as needed.

... then the OP is free to spend $1000+ for an auto backwash system which STILL will require periodic maintenance
