Water Service Requirement for Multiple Flushometers
Author: Plumber (OK)

I am looking at a remodel on a slab. Customer wants auto flushes on all the bathrooms. Problem is the service is only 1" which is all that is required for a flushometer, but not sure how many it would handle. The building is not public so they wouldn't be flushed consecutively, but I don't want problems down the road. My only option is to bring another supply into the building, but don't want to if not necessary. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!

In the olden times:

The (last) nipple through the wall was 1" to the angle stop.

The actual service was 1.25" (which could serve 2 flush-o-meters).

? Today ?

You can add a pressure tank designed for a well to offset the pressure drop after the fact. The local Sloan representative suggested that as an alternative to repiping a system.

As flushometers have become more effective with only 1 gal per flush, the perimeters have changed for the better. However, as suggested by the local Sloan Rep and well tank in line would help against a sudden pressure drop. Exactly how many flushometers would be involved in the finished job?

Appreciate the info KCRoto! That is an option I didn't think of as I've never installed one. I'm sure I can figure it out and have this great site if I have any questions!

Greatly appreciate your post Wheelchair! This is an office project for a tribe here. It is a large building with 11 bathrooms...overkill in my opinion, but the customer is always right, right? I believe there are only like 5 people that work in this building, although they have a "great room" where they can hold meetings, etc. so in actuality there won't be much being used at the same time, with the possibility of some if and when they hold a function and with the advent of the newer efficient flushometers, that should take quite a load off. As of now there are 11 water closets, 2 urinals, 11 lavatories, 1 kitchen sink, 1 bar sink and 1 ice maker. This is a lot of fixtures and I'm not worried about any of these except the water closets, as I say, very very low chance of a combination of these being used at the same time. Thank you for your interest and any input!

I have been doing that for 50 years, often to minimize the effects of a very long supply line to overcome the water's inertia, even with a proper sized water supply line. WIthout the tank, the pressure would drop to zero when a toilet was flushed and then create a massive "hammer" when the water started flowing and restored the pressure. I have seen suspended 2" lines "jump" 12" when the hammer occurred and once it even broke off a 1/2 branch brazed into a tee.
