 Water leaking from Water Heater
Author: BigPlay81 (OH)

I kept having a puddle around my water heater, so someone at work suggested I try replacing the pressure relief valve. (I never actually saw any water leaking from anywhere but there would always be a puddle whenever I checked.)

I replaced the PRV and the leaking stopped or so I thought. All was good for 3 days, then on day 4 I had about a half dollar size puddle directly underneath the extension pipe, so I knew the water had come from the PRV.

I wiped it up and all was good for about 3 more days, then BAM! I had the same old puddle around my water heater! I looked up the valve and read the reviews and saw that some other people had problems with that one, so I went to a different store and bought another one and replaced it.

Two days later, same big puddle around my water heater!!!!

Now what? Is it another bad valve? Or is there something else wrong?

Thanks!

the valve is doing its' job

it is relieving excess pressure

you evidently have a 'closed system'

either:

install an expansion tank

or

repair/recharge/recharge existing tank

There already is an expansion tank installed...

So is there a problem with my water heater? Or is there a problem with the expansion tank?

expansion tank

? what is the air pressure ?

? does the 'bladder' hold air ?

I don't know. That's beyond my skill set. I guess it's time to call a plumber?

Check your static water pressure at a hose faucet. Let about a gallon of water out and check the pressure with nothing else running. This is your static pressure. Go to your expansion tank and press the pin in the schrader valve on the tank(like a bike tire) and see if water comes out. If it does, your tank is bad. Next shut off the water before the expansion tank and go turn on the hot water at a faucet until water doesn't flow to relieve the pressure in the expansion tank. Use a bike pressure gauge to check the air pressure in the tank. I always set mine to 5 psi above the static pressure to account for pressure drops in the city main during the daytime. Pump up the tank if needed.
